From June to August 2007, Greece experienced the worst summer of forest fires in living memory, with more than 3,000 fires reported across half of the country. Three separate heat waves swept through the country, each one reaching temperatures of over 40°C (105°F). The extreme heat, combined with strong dry winds, provided ideal conditions for fires to start and spread. The fires destroyed swaths of forests and emptied villages throughout the country, with new fires starting before others could be brought under control, overwhelming firefighters. Over the course of three months, some 65 people died, numerous others were injured, and over 268,700 hectares (1,035 square miles) of forestland were destroyed. By the beginning of September 2007, firefighters, assisted by reinforcements from across the European Union, had managed to contain all but a few of the fires.
